Croatia’s spectacular coastline and divine beauty have been attracting tourists for decades. You might have been wondering if there is a way of experiencing this amazing country’s rich culture and famous hospitality without the nuisance of crowded beaches, while still enjoying ideal weather. Visit Split in May, and find out! From local festivities, to thousand-year-old monuments and stunning beaches, the possibilities this small country offers are endless. Even outside the high season. Here is our pick for things to do in Split in May:
As incredible as it sounds, just walking around old town Split will allow you to experience its 1700-year-old history. The walls of Diocletian’s Palace will immediately take you back to the times of the Roman Empire. You’ll also notice the different building styles later added and blended into the palace throughout the centuries. This shows just how many souls laughed, cried and loved in this city. You should start your old town tour at the famous statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović – don’t forget to rub his toe for good luck! Once inside the palace walls, take the time to climb up the bell tower for an outstanding panoramic view of the city, or go underground to the fascinating cellars, also famous as a filming location of the world-renowned series Game of Thrones. The month of May is a time when you get to do all this without the pressure of the crowds and you finally don’t have to rush to take the perfect photo.
St. Domnius Cathedral
Once you have explored all the beauties of the old center of Split, a 20-minute drive from the city will take you to the impressive Fortress of Klis. This mighty fortification was home to many Croatian kings and guarded Dalmatia for many centuries, especially against the Ottomans. Of course, as Croatia is a country of fabulous views, Klis is no exception. May is a perfect time to enjoy that sun-kissed seashore view.
A Dalmatian way of increasing serotonin levels is by spending time in the crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea. Quench your thirst for adventure and take a short trip to the hidden coves, reachable only by boat, and enjoy your little piece of turquoise heaven. Adrenaline lovers can even learn how to sail with one of the local sailing companies. What an experience to tell the folks back home! May usually marks the start of the swimming season for many locals, so why not join them and dive into the pristine waters of a hidden and quiet beach.
Uninhabited Adriatic island
The picturesque hill in the heart of Split is a source of countless possibilities for all nature and sports lovers. Not only can you go for a jog, swim, bike ride, free climb or a relaxing walk in the dense forest – you can also hike all the way to the top of Marjan Hill and witness the genuinely magnificent natural beauty of Split and its surroundings. For all those looking for a more challenging hiking experience, Mosor, the massive mountain you see in Split’s backdrop, is less than a 30-minute drive away from the city. Join one of the hiking groups up to the mountain lodge, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Split and the islands!
Hermitage Caves – Marjan Hill
Lucky visitors of Split in May can join the week-long festivities in the first week of the month, leading up to May 7th. The locals live up to the Split’s reputation of the “craziest city in the world” and celebrate the city’s patron Saint Domnius – whose cathedral you’ll find towering over the old town. Pick between concerts, poetry readings, exhibitions, a rowing regatta, or just do it all! Legend has it you should go home with something made of wood, and that’s why you’ll see stalls selling wooden souvenirs – from spoons to toys. The best part comes later in the day – you can join a citywide game of Bingo (Tombola), party with the locals – especially if you win money at Bingo – and end the day with the magical fireworks.
Promenade Riva
By now we all know that Split is a city of spectacular views, and May’s mild climate and sunny days are the perfect time to explore the patios around the city. Downtowns’ Teraca Bamba overlooks the west coast, and is a perfect spot for gazing at the colorful sunsets of the Adriatic Sea while trying out every cocktail on the list. Restaurant Adriatic is famous for its breathtaking Mediterranean terrace, bound to stimulate all your senses. The restaurant boasts an incredible fish and meat dish selection as well as a mesmerizing view of the nearby archipelago as sailboats pass by. ProCaffe, located just a few minutes outside the city center, has one of the nicest patios in town with such a relaxing sea and mountain view it is almost unreal – and their desserts are godly!
The city of velvet sunsets is less than two hours away from Split. Its sunsets inspired and amazed artists throughout the centuries – including Alfred Hitchcock during his visit to Zadar in 1964. Take a stroll to reach the famous sea organ on Zadar’s promenade, a contemporary architectural wonder which allows sea waves to play music!
These two beautiful sites are probably already on your bucket list, and for a good reason. Visiting them in May is a perfect time – the prices are much friendlier to the wallet, while the weather is ideal. Plus, you get to avoid all the tourists swarming in for a picture. Krka is closer to Split, so if you’re short on time, it’s your better option, but if you’re here for a long-term stay, do not skip a day trip to Plitvice! The sound of the waterfalls with the sparkling sun bouncing off the water is genuinely enchanting, and it would be a shame to miss this experience.
Krka Waterfalls
A Croatian itinerary without a shout-out to the islands would be incomplete. Visiting the famous golden shoehorn beach on the island of Brač without thousands of people to share it with, is an actual possibility in the month of May. How about a party in Hvar with affordable prices? Or a stressless wine tour on Korčula? If you are into history, Vis may also be a fun island destination to explore. Whichever island you choose to visit during your stay in Split, springtime will give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy them just as the locals do.
