The years 2020-2023 were extremely difficult for the hospitality industry. The COVID-19 pandemic did not just change the way we live and interact, it has completely changed the way we do business. Many restrictions have become a normal part of our lives, which was extremely hard to incorporate into the hospitality sector whose nature revolves around interaction with multiple different people on a daily basis, whether customers, staff, or suppliers. For our guests, who like to spend time freely around the hotel and feel at home, the restrictions and uncertainty periods also brought many challenges. At the Marvie Hotel, we had to re-design our approach to customer service, which is considered the core element of tourism, while at the same time focusing on creating satisfying experiences for our guests without compromising their safety. With the hard work and dedication of our employees, we implemented the highest standards in cleanliness and disinfection, with the aim of protecting the health of our guests and staff. Their effort was recognized, and as we enter the post-pandemic, ‘’new normal’’ period, Marvie Hotel has been acknowledged as a favorite place to stay in Split for many travelers, be it for business, vacation, relaxation, or health purposes.
Even though numerous negative and devasting consequences occurred during the pandemic, it opened new perspectives to many people, and one of them was heightened environmental concern. In response to both the shift in consumer demands and the real-time urgency for environmental reform, many businesses have started to pay attention to the effect they have on the ecosystem, striving to make a positive change. When it comes to Marvie Hotel, implementing eco-friendly and sustainable practices that help preserve the environment has been our focus from the day of our opening, when we carried out a set of actions with the aim of reducing our carbon footprint. Aware of the areas that still need improvement, we look positively into the future and continuously seek ways to further reduce our environmental impact. One sustainable step at a time, we aim to create a better place to live and work, while keeping our planet healthy for generations to come.
Marvie Hotel & Health is a city hotel in Split’s residential area Zenta that extends across 9,400 square meters and comprises a three-level underground public garage, 76 accommodation units, and a beautiful roof terrace with an outdoor swimming pool. During its design, every segment was made to match the concept of a health hotel; including the location by the sea, modern, soothing architecture, food and drink offers, and other hotel amenities. This contemporary-designed hotel is situated near the very heart of Split, Diocletian’s Palace, and in the immediate vicinity of other historical and cultural attractions, sports facilities, well-maintained beaches, and promenades by the sea.
Since the name “Marvie” carries the meaning of life by sea, special attention was given to the design of the Renevie wellness zone that offers plenty of relaxation options in the water – from an indoor pool with a space for rest and relaxation to an outdoor rooftop pool with a sun deck and a beautiful view of the sea. There is a relaxing spa area with a Finnish sauna, steam bath, and jacuzzi, as well as a professionally equipped fitness area for recreation and halls for individual and group programs. In addition to various massages, numerous beauty treatments, and dermatological services, our offer includes a wide range of medical wellness services and physiotherapeutic methods for faster recovery and better health of the entire body. To match the offer of health services and treatments that contribute to the physical and mental well-being of our guests, the hotel restaurant Da’Mar serves Mediterranean delicacies in its daily offer and is almost the only gastronomic paradise in the Split region serving delicious, creative, and for the most part, gluten-free dishes. The restaurant can also cater to guests’ specific dietary requirements, and create menus that satisfy all their nutritional needs.
The care for our guests extends to the care of our environment, as we are aware that the health of humans is intertwined with the health of the planet and it depends on its natural resources such as water, air, food, and energy that are essential for survival. At Marvie Hotel & Health, we are well aware of the fragility of our ecosystem, so in order to preserve our natural surroundings, we strive to responsibly manage our resources to minimize our impact on the environment. As part of our own sustainability initiative, Marvie Hotel & Health has already started to adopt environmentally friendly practices that contribute to the preservation of our planet. To ensure the health of both people and the planet, we have adopted a holistic and sustainable approach that considers the environmental, social, and economic impacts of hotel activities. By protecting and restoring the natural environment, promoting social justice and equity, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption, we can create a healthier and happier future for ourselves and the planet.
At Marvie Hotel & Health, we are committed to ensuring and improving the quality and durability of our services and operations in a systematic and continuous manner. Our sustainability plan is based on three pillars that reflect our values and vision: (1) people and market, (2) community, and (3) environment. We aim to create value for our customers, employees, and stakeholders by offering a unique hotel experience that meets their health needs and expectations. We also strive to contribute positively to the social and economic development of our local community by supporting various initiatives and projects. Moreover, we respect and protect the natural environment that surrounds us by minimizing our environmental impact and enhancing our resource efficiency. Through our sustainability plan, we demonstrate our responsibility and accountability towards ourselves, our guests, our local community, and our planet.
People are the foundation of the hospitality business: by welcoming our guests, we embrace their cultures and customs, accept diversity, and in the end… become friends and family. Many activities, businesses, partners, and brands come together to make a traveling experience a unique one. As a privately-owned company, Marvie Hotel & Health is aware of the various ways it connects people, businesses, and products, and takes responsibility for doing so in a sustainable manner. The hotel is committed to building lasting relationships with its guests, staff, and suppliers based on respect for human diversity and compliance with laws and regulations.
Our goal is to ensure that all aspects of our business comply with the highest standards of human rights. This includes:
A particular priority is to provide a safe and protective environment for all our guests, especially for children. Our commitment includes:
Going beyond just the legal requirements, Marvie Hotel has developed its own Ethical Code with clearly defined rules of conduct established with the aim of responsible behavior towards business partners, guests, and other employees of the Company. The purpose of the Code is to establish ethical criteria that transparently contribute to the quality of business cooperation and the implementation of all business processes within the Company. To ensure the quality and integrity of its services, the hotel has developed a Supplier Code of Conduct and monitors its implementation.
Furthermore, the hotel seeks to raise awareness of sustainability among its guests, staff, and suppliers.
At Marvie Hotel & Health we focus on the health and well-being of our guests. Apart from assisting our visitors with their regular activities, the focus of our employees is to make their stay as memorable as possible. This also includes the sustainable design of hotel rooms that satisfy all the comfort needs of our guests. As part of our own sustainability initiative, Marvie Hotel & Health has already started to adopt environmentally friendly practices that contribute to the preservation of our planet and we encourage our guests to participate in these initiatives as well.
Our external communication is done electronically whenever possible, thus reducing paper waste. The hotel no longer provides paper brochures, making all the relevant information available on the hotel website. Additionally, when the guests check in, they also have the possibility to download our app Marvie Experience, where they can find all the relevant information regarding their stay at the hotel and in the city of Split. In this way, everything is contained in the digital sphere; guests have all the necessary information in the palm of their hand, while the use of paper is reduced.
We also offer information on eco-friendly transportation options. At the reception, electronic taxis can be booked and there is the possibility to rent e-bikes. Since the location of the hotel is in proximity to many attractions, we encourage our guests to visit them on foot, which not only contributes to the environmental conservation efforts but also positively impacts their health. We also have charging stations for electric vehicles on site.
Additionally, efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are installed to optimize energy usage. “Energy savers” have also been implemented in every room, meaning that electrical devices are switched off when guests leave the room. The hotel actively promotes energy conservation by encouraging guests to reuse towels and linens, thereby reducing water and electricity consumption. Moreover, we have been offering eco-friendly room amenities, such as natural cellulosic hand towels, toilet paper, and facial tissues, as well as installing smart care dispensers that we re-fill with plant-based, organic shampoos. All linen in the rooms and the restaurant is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) and Fairtrade certified.
We have also installed efficient recycling programs to minimize waste whenever possible, reminding our guests to participate in these initiatives as well. The kitchen at Da’Mar restaurant complies with our sustainable practices as well. Supporting local farmers and reducing food miles are a priority for us. Our restaurant serves locally sourced, organic, fair-trade, and seasonal ingredients. Our guests can choose vegetarian, gluten-free, or other menu options. Organic coffee and tea are served in the bar and restaurant. In addition, we have minimized the usage of single-use packaging for food and beverages served inside our hotel, as well as the single-use packaging for fruits and vegetables. We are also working on the long-term goal to agree on the same with our suppliers.
As a result of our effort to create a sustainable environment for our guests, Marvie Hotel & Health incorporates a calming atmosphere that offers relaxation and a feeling of satisfaction, with the possibility to improve physical stamina, while keeping mental harmony and stability. All this with well-balanced eco-friendly practices.
The success of Marvie Hotel is based solely on our employees who deliver the best service and are at the guest’s disposal 24/7. Their passion, work ethic, kindness, creativity, and their unique personalities make the heart of our hotel. Striving to become an ‘’employer of choice’’, Marvie takes special care of its employees, by establishing diverse approaches to managing human resources, including talent acquisition and retention, training and development, career planning, employee job engagement and satisfaction, and occupational health and safety. We comply with local and national laws and regulations concerning employment, remuneration and benefits, and the right to collective bargaining. We highly value and appreciate all the hard work, loyalty, and contributions of every team member and colleague. For this reason, we have also developed an additional employee benefits package, going beyond the legal requirements. These benefits encompass the opportunity for annual comprehensive health check-ups, paid supplementary health insurance, and financial support for gym memberships through the Multisport card. This way all our employees are motivated to follow a healthy and active lifestyle. Furthermore, we emphasize active communication with all our employees through the Jenz application, ensuring that they are well-informed and engaged in our company’s initiatives and activities. Having our own internal social network helps boost our employee engagement and motivation, as it brings our internal communications to the next level and acquaintances our employees with all the important news and relevant information from the hotel.
As satisfied employees are a prerequisite for satisfied guests, our actions are aligned with our brand promise, which guides our team to provide a positive experience to our guests. This means we make the most of every opportunity to assist, improve, have fun, impress, learn, and grow. That is why we invest in training and education, not only in the field of expertise of our employees but also in the field of sustainability. We conduct regular meetings to inform and maintain up-to-date knowledge on fire safety. Furthermore, our employees are encouraged to participate in training sessions focusing on panic and aggression prevention. To ensure the competence of our in-house maintenance staff, we provide ongoing training and periodic knowledge assessments. Together with our partner, Alfa Atest, an expert in labor health and safety, we remain committed to continuous enhancements in employee health, safety, and long-term employability, while aligning with sustainable practices.
Our suppliers and business partners across the value chain are an important part of attaining sustainable goals, which is why we coordinate our mutual operations in a way that is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. That is why Marvie Hotel chooses its partners carefully; based on a similar commitment to sustainability. Moreover, our suppliers are required to comply with our internal Code of Conduct for Suppliers. This means that they comply with our responsible purchasing policy, have all the necessary certifications, and also implement sustainability practices, such as reducing the number of deliveries, paying attention to the weight of each delivery, and using recycled materials, especially for packaging purposes.
When choosing a business partner, priority is given to the local suppliers of fish, meat, and other produce, as well as to promoting local artisans, or small-scale producers to the guests by recommending local markets and shops. We purchase from multiple vendors to avoid excessive reliance on a single vendor, and to prevent vendors from depending solely on us. We also create opportunities for new companies and local businesses by periodically reviewing our regular suppliers.
Marvie Hotel has been home to many people coming from all over the world. Our guests have received a warm welcome not only from our hotel staff but also from the kind and friendly residents of the city of Split. Moreover, the locals are very often guests in our dining area, use the spa and wellness zone, or book other health services offered by our partners in the hotel.
Our sustainability initiative would not be possible without the support of the local community. That is why we believe that our presence should also benefit our community, not only by employing the locals but also by doing business with local companies, preserving nature and natural resources, and offering help to socially vulnerable groups, thus promoting social cohesion. As one example of such practice in giving back to the community, Marvie Hotel hosted pupils from the town of Vukovar, where we organized transportation, accommodation, nutrition, sightseeing, and entertainment for children who did not have the opportunity to spend their holidays at the beach. Moreover, we regularly organize a wellness day and social gatherings for oncology patients as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness program. We regularly participate in local charity actions and support local environment-friendly activities. We truly believe in giving back to the community we operate in, to make it a better place to live and visit.
Implementing sustainable practices in the hotel industry is of extreme importance, particularly when considering the profound impact it has on the environment. Hotels, often characterized by their resource-intensive operations, can significantly contribute to environmental degradation if not managed responsibly. That is why implementing eco-friendly and sustainable practices that help preserve the environment has been the focus of Marvie Hotel & Health from the very beginning. All of our operational divisions are determined to reduce to the minimum the consumption of natural resources and the expense of energy.
Since its opening in 2017, the hotel has been powered by electricity and gas from sustainable sources, and ever since we have been taking several proactive steps to reduce our impact on the environment. Firstly, we have appointed an environmental and prevention coordinator to oversee the environmental conservation efforts and to make sure we comply with all the sustainability goals. Moreover, we have installed light sensors in corridors and toilets, along with energy savers in all rooms. All lighting devices within the hotel are LED-based, thus significantly reducing energy consumption. A central and automated climate control system has been put in place for more efficient temperature regulation. The hotel’s windows feature Low-E (low-emissivity) glass that minimizes the amount of infrared and ultraviolet light penetration, without minimizing the overall visibility in the building, which contributes to energy conservation efforts. Waste disposal practices include the separate discarding of biodegradable waste, fats, and oils. A recycling program also covers various other waste categories, such as batteries, toner cartridges, and electronic waste.
A cleaning agent dosing station for housekeeping has been installed, along with the use of green and eco-label cleaning materials. Collaborative agreements with suppliers have been made to incorporate returnable packaging.
We have also introduced eco-labels (or equivalent high standards) for food, water, and coffee. We purchase linen made from organic cotton, while our towels are produced in a process that ensures they are free from harmful substances. Additionally, the hotel provides electric bikes to further promote eco-friendly transportation options for guests. These initiatives collectively reflect Marvie Hotel’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Looking to the future, Marvie Hotel is persistent in its commitment to sustainability and continuously seeks ways to further reduce its environmental impact. In the spirit of this ongoing dedication, we are pleased to announce some additional steps that we plan to undertake:
