Start your experience by taking a stroll around old town Split. Before entering the palace walls, do not miss the famous statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović and make sure you rub his toe for good luck! Once inside the 1700-year-old walls of Diocletian’s Palace take us back to the times of the Roman Empire, while different building styles were later blended into the palace throughout the centuries. Climbing up the bell tower, right next to the mesmerizing Peristyle square, is an excellent way to grasp the outstanding city panorama, while going underground to the fascinating cellars is a must – especially for all fans of the world-renowned series Game of Thrones. Namely, this ancient city and its surroundings are famous also as filming locations of this epic series. In fact, the Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace were used as the location where Daenerys’ dragons were held captive in the fourth season.
If you are interested in leaving Split during your stay, there are many day-trip options to choose from. Two more cities whose sights are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, Trogir and Šibenik, are just one hour to one hour and 30 minutes drive away from Split. In the vicinity of Šibenik, the National Park Krka can be visited in a two-hour tour around its waterfalls, mesmerizing nature and wildlife. If you are in search of adrenaline, Zip Line Omiš, just 30 kilometers away from the city, is an excellent choice.
On the other hand, regular ferry-boat lines allow visitors to explore some of the islands overlooking Split in just one day. Rides which take one or two hours will take you to the popular islands of Brač and Hvar.
Proximity to the city of Split and excellent ferry-boat connections, allow visitors to make day trips to many beautiful Dalmatian islands, such as Brač or Hvar – speedboat island hopping is another exciting possibility. The town of Hvar, along with the homonymous island, is one of Croatia’s most popular destinations, and for a good reason! Take the time to explore the picturesque town’s fascinating historical heritage, visit the island’s renowned vineyards and above all, its spectacular bays. Both the southern and northern coast of the island boast dozens of breathtaking beaches, such as Zavala, Dubovica, Mala Stiniva… The small archipelago of Pakleni islands overlooking Hvar has for decades been a popular getaway destination even among Hollywood celebrities.
If sunbathing and swimming are high on your list of priorities, we suggest taking a day trip to the most popular beach in Croatia, on the island of Brač. Located on the southern shore, close to the village of Bol, Zlatni Rat, or Golden Horn beach is a unique pearl of nature, famous for its shape which changes direction due to sea currents. This stunning pebbled beach should find its place on your bucket list, whether you plan on sunbathing or surfing.
