How to spend 24 hours in Split

When 24 hours are all the time you have to explore Split, make sure not to miss the following highlights. One day in the second-largest city in Croatia can be spent by including historical sights, nature, sunbathing and swimming, as well as adding adrenaline rushes to your itinerary! If you have already visited this beautiful city, and want to explore its surroundings, we will also suggest a number of day trips, most of which you can book at our reception desk. As a transportation hub, Split is very well connected and easy to reach by boats, trains, buses, and planes.

Exploring the Old Town - Diocletian’s Palace

Start your experience by taking a stroll around old town Split. Before entering the palace walls, do not miss the famous statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović and make sure you rub his toe for good luck! Once inside the 1700-year-old walls of Diocletian’s Palace take us back to the times of the Roman Empire, while different building styles were later blended into the palace throughout the centuries. Climbing up the bell tower, right next to the mesmerizing Peristyle square, is an excellent way to grasp the outstanding city panorama, while going underground to the fascinating cellars is a must – especially for all fans of the world-renowned series Game of Thrones. Namely, this ancient city and its surroundings are famous also as filming locations of this epic series. In fact, the Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace were used as the location where Daenerys’ dragons were held captive in the fourth season.

Coffee time!

It’s time to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee, just like the locals do – in Split it is part of Mediterranean tradition and at times it is impossible to find a free table in the many coffee shops in the Old Town as well as on the city’s main promenade – the Riva. While the Riva and the city squares are the most popular meeting spots, all true coffee-lovers lately enjoy more than one cup of coffee at specialty coffee shops such as D16 Coffee, kava2 or 4coffee soul food.

Beaches in Split

Ježinac beach

In the summertime, one day in Split can be spent exclusively exploring its amazing beaches, on foot or by bike. This coastal town is surrounded by crystal clear – blue flag beaches, and these are, in order from east to west: Žnjan, Trstenik, Ovčice, Bačvice – the most popular sand beach, Ježinac – a rocky beach, but with plenty of diving spots, pebble beaches Obojena svjetlost and Kašjuni, and finally the kilometers of beaches surrounding the Park-forest Marjan.

Marjan Hill

The city of Split is a peninsula with the picturesque Marjan Hill covering a large area. If you love to spend your summer days in nature or on the beach, we suggest visiting this park-forest – a green oasis loved by both locals and tourists, offering infinite possibilities for all sports and nature lovers. Marjan includes more than 30 km of running, hiking and bicycle trails leading to its very top. During the summer months we strongly suggest hydrating and bringing water and snacks when walking or cycling to the hilltop. At the top you will be rewarded with stunning views of the islands of Brač, Šolta, Čiovo, the nearby mountains, as well as a panoramic view of the whole city.

Visiting the islands - Brač and Hvar

Proximity to the city of Split and excellent ferry-boat connections, allow visitors to make day trips to many beautiful Dalmatian islands, such as Brač or Hvar – speedboat island hopping is another exciting possibility. The town of Hvar, along with the homonymous island, is one of Croatia’s most popular destinations, and for a good reason! Take the time to explore the picturesque town’s fascinating historical heritage, visit the island’s renowned vineyards and above all, its spectacular bays. Both the southern and northern coast of the island boast dozens of breathtaking beaches, such as Zavala, Dubovica, Mala Stiniva… The small archipelago of Pakleni islands overlooking Hvar has for decades been a popular getaway destination even among Hollywood celebrities.

If sunbathing and swimming are high on your list of priorities, we suggest taking a day trip to the most popular beach in Croatia, on the island of Brač. Located on the southern shore, close to the village of Bol, Zlatni Rat, or Golden Horn beach is a unique pearl of nature, famous for its shape which changes direction due to sea currents. This stunning pebbled beach should find its place on your bucket list, whether you plan on sunbathing or surfing.
