Croatia joins the Schengen zone: what will change for the travelers and digital nomads?

The border-free Schengen area promises free movement to more than 400 million EU citizens, together with foreign nationals living in the EU or visiting the EU for different purposes (tourism, studying, business). Such a free movement of people without unnecessary formalities presents both opportunities and challenges for travelers, especially digital nomads, who could be affected by the new rules. In order to establish control over the entrance and the stay of non-EU members, the 90/180-day rule was established. That means that foreign nationals can stay in the Schengen zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day period with the rule applying to the following categories:

• foreign nationals who are non-EU citizens but can enter visa-free in the Schengen area (US, UK, Canadian, Australian citizens, etc.).
• foreign nationals who possess a multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa if issued for a period longer than 90 days

It is extremely important to make a count of the days spent in the Schengen zone to avoid overstaying which can bring severe penalties. In case there is a need for a longer stay in Croatia for the purposes of work, digital nomads can apply for a 12-month permit. A temporary stay is granted for up to a year and it cannot be extended, but a new application can be submitted 6 months after the expiration of the previously granted temporary stay, which was described in detail in one of our previous blogs.
