Croatia in October - Visit Split during October

The appeal of October in Split lies in being able to experience the attractive Mediterranean lifestyle without the need to face aggressive crowds of selfie-sticks and endless lines of hungry tourists. Except for the occasional rain, the temperatures stay pleasant, so you can give the city and its surrounding nature the attention they deserve. Whether you decide to hike in the nearby Mosor or Kozjak mountains, visit the famous Plitvice Lakes National Park, or simply bask in the sun on the wonderful beaches of the Adriatic coast, Croatia is bound to leave you breathless no matter what you chose.
October is a truly remarkable time to visit Split, with temperatures of around 20 – 25 °C, combined with average costs of accommodation and attractions dropping by 50%. Many agree that Split is best enjoyed when the high season ends. Here are some suggestions on things to do when in town in this period of the year:

Participate in a Regatta

Regardless of the time of year you are visiting Split, our long-term itinerary will give you a general idea of places you should not miss while here. However, October is a month reserved for some unique activities, such as regattas. Live out your dream of sailing with either one of the many local sailing companies, or, if you have a sailing license, rent out your own boat and join a racing event.
The month begins with one of the oldest regattas in Croatia – the famous Mrduja regatta, named after the islet Mrduja, the turning point on the 22 km route Split – Mrduja – Split. It was first held all the way back in 1927, and ever since it is scheduled on the first weekend of October. The best spots for enjoying this inspiring event, unless you’re a part of it, of course, are two charming seaside hills in the Split city center – either Katalinić or Sustipan. There you’ll find crowds of people celebrating, watching the sailing race, and you are sure to make new local friends! If you miss this one, consider joining the Vis Regatta – the second oldest in Croatia – where you will sail to the incredible Vis island and live out your fantasies, surrounded by the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.

Visit the "Hands" Festival

Heritage Artcraft Nature Domestic Split is a project that unites local crafts and products. The post-season part of the festival takes place from October 2nd to 6th. We suggest tasting traditional cuisine or buying locally crafted souvenirs, while taking part of this significant event aimed at promoting regional culture. The all-day fair is a delightful experience for any traveler looking to explore the local customs and traditions, therefore if you happen to be in Split in October, you shouldn’t miss out on this unique event!

Celebrate Torcida's Birthday

You will probably learn about Split’s football team “Hajduk” as soon as you arrive to this Mediterranean town. It is impossible not to notice the graffiti on the walls, as well as the jerseys and other merchandise in the stores. The oldest supporters’ group in Europe – Torcida, dating back to 1950, celebrates its birthday on October 28th. Ask anyone who was in Split on this occasion, and you’ll understand just how exciting it can be. For Torcida’s 70th birthday last year, locals painted the sky red with thousands of flares – check out the video below, but it’s even better to join the party and experience it in person!

Taste traditional Meals During Restaurant Week

Food connoisseurs look forward to the tastiest week of October, when some of the city’s most popular restaurants unite in the famous Restaurant Week. For a period of ten days selected restaurants offer special promotional prices for multi-course meals! It’s a perfect time to try some of the local dishes, such as Pašticada – a braised beef dish slow-cooked in an aromatic sweet and sour sauce, or authentic black risotto, that got its name from the squid ink which paints it a jet black color. Our restaurant Da’Mar also takes part in this much loved event! The restaurant offers a gluten-free menu and an extensive wine list, but you can learn more about it here.
