Due to its excellent location on the Adriatic coast and mild Mediterranean climate, Split has become a favorite destination for many visitors. Even though the majority of the tourists prefer spending their summer holidays here, Split has plenty to offer throughout the year. Every season has its charms and allows visitors to enjoy ancient ruins, modern attractions, or relaxing beaches. Nurturing a small-town vibe known for its noisy streets and easy-going locals, Split will conquer your heart from the moment you arrive. We have prepared a short guide on how to enjoy Split in every season, from spring to winter – to fully experience the beauty of this city. And – if you are staying at the Marvie Hotel & Health, you will have access to the best health and wellness services in the city.
Spring is a great time to visit Split, as the weather is mild and sunny, and the crowds are not too big. You can explore the historical and cultural sights of the city, such as the Diocletian’s Palace, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, and the Riva promenade. You can read about the city center in one of our previous blogs.
If you are in search of an active vacation, you can take a cycling tour or jog around Marjan Forest Park. To challenge yourself, go hiking in the nearby mountains of Kozjak and Mosor whose hiking routes and trails are tailored to different levels of hiker experience. Make sure that your plan includes a visit to the “Diocletian’s Path” trail, which stretches along the Vilar stream, between the towns of Žrnovnica and Srinjine. The trail follows the official road of the ancient Romans that extended from Salona to the east. The trail itself is not demanding, so you can enjoy a pleasant walk while exploring numerous natural and cultural landmarks.
Taking an excursion to the nearby cities and attractions is also recommended at this time of year as the roads are not too congested and the temperatures are perfect for exploring. We recommend visiting the ancient Salona in the vicinity of today’s Solin or exploring the cities of Trogir, Klis, or Omiš, which are located in the immediate surroundings of Split. You can learn more about each city on our previous blog.
At the beginning of March, the Flower Festival is organized at multiple locations with several different thematic programs and educational workshops. It hosts flower designers and florists from all over Europe making it a visually stunning event.
Split’s patron saint, Saint Domnius is celebrated on May 7th with a procession, mass, rich gastronomic offers, music, and lots of other local events.
Picigin, a popular beach game, has its own ‘’world’’ championship event organized each year in June. Even though it is not a world championship in a traditional sense, it still gathers lots of people who support their favorite players. One thing is certain: fun is guaranteed for both players and visitors!
If you want to relax and rejuvenate, you can visit the Renevie wellness zone at the Marvie Hotel, where you can choose from a variety of treatments, such as massages, facials, and body wraps. You can also use the pool, the jacuzzi, and the saunas.
Summer is the peak season in Split, as the city becomes a hotspot for tourists and locals alike. The temperature can get quite high, so you might want to cool off at one of the many beaches in and around the city. Some of the most popular ones are Kašjuni, Bačvice, and Bene. You can also take a boat trip to the nearby islands, such as Hvar, Brač, and Vis, where you can enjoy the crystal-clear water and the scenic views.
If you are in search of some fun and entertainment, you can check out the events and festivals that take place in Split during the summer. Some of the most notable ones are the Split Summer Festival, which features music, theater, and dance performances, and the Ultra Europe Music Festival, which attracts some of the biggest names in electronic music. If you’re interested in history and want to participate in a unique experience, visit the Days of Diocletian, which transport Split back to the time when this emperor ruled the city. Roman legions and guards alternate on the city streets and squares, while Emperor Diocletian travels through the Riva and Peristyle in a carriage, greeting the gathered spectators. The sounds of fanfares, drummers, and Roman music echo through the city. The overall experience is complemented by a gastronomic offer from the time of Emperor Diocletian, together with concerts and other music programs. All the city’s historical and cultural attractions are must–see, but since the temperatures during the day can be quite high, we recommend taking an evening stroll down the streets of Split. This will also be a great opportunity to see how vibrant and positive this city is because the restaurants and bars are filled with people whose laughter echoes through the streets, intertwining with the summer music playing late into the night.
Even though all the delicious food, ice cream, cocktails, and other delicacies can be tempting while on vacation, don’t forget that balance is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Try to incorporate exercise into your vacation, and the fitness area at Marvie Hotel is perfect for a quick workout, whether on your own or with the guidance of professional trainers.
Autumn is a lovely time to visit Split, as the weather is still warm and pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. You can take advantage of the lower prices and the peaceful atmosphere to discover the hidden gems of the city, such as the Galerija Mestrović, which displays the works of the famous Croatian sculptor; or Split City Museum which demonstrates interesting displays of the development of the city. A detailed guide through the city’s most popular museums and galleries is available in our previous blog.
The sea in September is still warm, so many people enjoy swimming and relaxing at the beach. The weather is also perfect for sightseeing the historical monuments and enjoying the city in the quieter ambient. You can visit the Green Market and enjoy the fresh produce and local delicacies such as fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat specialties, and many more.
If you want to explore the nature and beauty of the Split area, try horseback riding. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, numerous ranches in old Dalmatian villages offer horse riding opportunities, some even including a welcome drink or lunch. This way, you can spend the whole day outdoors, exploring ancient Roman roads and trails while enjoying the untouched nature.
Autumn is the best time of the year to take care of your skin, as it may become dry and damaged after the summer, due to high temperatures and sun exposure. Therefore, we recommend a visit to the dermatology clinic MediDerm at the Marvie Hotel, where you can schedule various treatments in the fields of plastic and vascular surgery, dermatovenereology, endocrinology, and other services. If you’re considering a smile transformation, visit the Implant Dental Center Ružević at the Marvie Hotel. With four modernly equipped examination rooms, a surgical hall, a sterilization room, and an X-ray, IDC Ružević is considered one of the most eminent and modern dental clinics in Dalmatia.
The ambiance in Split during winter is quieter, which is exactly why this time of the year for many people is a favorite time to visit the city. December is a great period to enjoy the festive spirit and the cozy atmosphere of the city, as it lights up with decorations and celebrations. You can visit the Advent in Split, the largest Christmas market in the region, where you can find food, drinks, crafts, and entertainment. The festive atmosphere is most vibrant along the Riva, Pjaca, and Prokurative, where wooden-roofed stalls burst with festive foods, unique souvenirs, and the sweet melodies of seasonal concerts. Split also organizes a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration on the Riva with concerts by popular Croatian musicians and a rich fireworks display at midnight.
In several locations in the city, ice rinks have been opened where both adults and children can demonstrate their skating skills. Those who are not brave enough to step on the ice can watch from a distance and enjoy mulled wine and other holiday treats, with fritters (fritule) being the most popular.
In mid-December, Split becomes a nautical paradise with the traditional Christmas regatta of cruisers, where dozens of sailboats sail the Adriatic Sea, competing in an exciting race that has become a favorite winter event for both locals and visitors.
During winter, the residents of Split maintain a unique tradition in which the bravest ones swim in the Adriatic Sea. If the weather is warm, the popular game of picigin is often played as well.
In January, a large number of the city’s museums participate in the traditional ‘’Night of the Museums’’ in which museums offer free entry for a part of the day and many other venues host special events. The two-day Split Carnival is organized in February and it includes lots of entertaining activities for both kids and adults.
For the true athletes, the Split Half Marathon, usually held in February, will feel like a special treat. The track is a bit over 21 km long and takes you from Riva, across the whole city, around Marjan Hill, and back to the starting point. This is the experience you will never forget.
If after a long day spent outside, you want to warm up and relax, you can visit the bar and the restaurant at the Marvie Hotel, where you can savor the local healthy cuisine, fine wines, and premium cocktails.
Regardless of whether you are interested in history, culture, nature, or entertainment, each season offers a unique opportunity to discover something new about Split. And if you are looking for a modern, comfortable, and convenient place to stay, you will find it at the Marvie Hotel & Health, where you will have access to the best health and wellness services in the city.
