Sun, Sea, Sand and Smiles: family-friendly activities in the summertime

The city of Split, with its mild climate and stunning beaches, offers various forms of entertainment and enjoyment. However, apart from the sea and beaches, both children and adults in Split can find a multitude of different activities to enjoy for hours. One of the great advantages of Split is that you can visit most of its attractions during a leisurely walk. While wandering the city streets and exploring cultural landmarks, you will come across numerous parks where your children can take a break and play.

To discover the best of Split, we’ve singled out several locations and activities that both parents and children can enjoy, creating wonderful shared memories.

1. Experience a beach adventure

Take your kids to some of the city’s beautiful beaches like Žnjan or Bačvice, which are just a short walk away from Marvie Hotel. These beaches offer clear waters, shallow entry points, and are perfect for swimming or snorkeling. The beach in Split is like a giant playground where children can have a lot of fun. They can build sandcastles, or pick up seashells which helps them get better at using their hands. They can jump over waves, swim or run around, which is good for their physical coordination.

After a fun day spent at the beach, if your children still want to play in the water, the pool at Marvie Hotel can be an excellent choice. If you get hungry after all that swimming, our Da’Mar restaurant is nearby. We understand that keeping children energized and well-fed during their adventures is parents’ top priority. That’s why we provide healthy meals and snacks for you and your little explorers. You can simply focus on having fun, knowing that we’ve got you covered in the nutrition department. Our restaurant is equipped with child-friendly high chairs so you can enjoy your meal knowing your little ones are safe.

2. Go on a field trip

Explore the nearby islands or get to know the surroundings of Split. If you don’t know where to start, our friendly staff at Marvie Hotel can help you choose the destination. There is a wide range of excursions available, tailored to children of different ages. From trips to Plitvice Lakes or Krka Waterfalls, which even one-year-olds can enjoy, to slightly more challenging activities like kayaking or rafting suitable for older children.

These well-planned family excursions are the perfect adventure for kids because they combine elements of exploration, education, and a bit of excitement. Children are given a unique opportunity to discover the beautiful Adriatic coast and hidden coves or the interior of Dalmatia and its untouched nature. At the same time, depending on the type of excursion, children can learn about the history and culture of new destinations.

3. Explore the city center: Diocletian's Palace and take a walk along the Riva

Explore the ancient Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is located a 30-minute walk from the Marvie Hotel. Kids can have a blast wandering through the maze-like streets and imagining life in Roman times. For a special experience, we recommend climbing the bell tower of St. Domnius Cathedral, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Don’t forget to visit the statue of Grgur Ninski, which is probably the favorite statue of all Split’s children because it comes with a unique tradition. Namely, the statue is known for its large toe, which has been worn down by the touches of countless visitors who believe that rubbing or touching it brings good luck. Encourage your children to join in on the tradition, touch Grgur’s big toe, and make a wish.

Another very popular place in Split is the vibrant City Promenade, known as Riva. This lively waterfront area is lined with cafes, ice cream parlors, and street performers. Children will enjoy watching the dynamic atmosphere, spotting boats in the harbor, and indulging in some delicious treats.

If you continue your walk along Riva towards the western coast of Split, known as Zapadna Obala, you will experience breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the nearby islands. Children will love watching the boats go by and exploring the rocky shoreline. You can finish your walk in two very popular parks – Zvončac and Sustipan. Zvončac Park offers a serene environment with lush greenery, shaded pathways, playgrounds, and benches for you to relax while your children play. There’s also a small pebble beach nearby where kids can build sandcastles or paddle in the shallow waters. The park’s tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a family picnic, so be sure to pack some snacks and enjoy a meal in this scenic setting.

Sustipan Park is another gem on the western coast of Split. This park has a rich history and is a great place for kids to explore. It was once a cemetery and is now a serene park with winding paths, Mediterranean vegetation, and panoramic views of the sea. The park also features sculptures and monuments that tell the story of Split’s past. It’s a wonderful place to take a leisurely walk with your children while teaching them about the city’s heritage.

4. Spend a day at Marjan Hill

Marjan Hill is an oasis of nature and a perfect escape from the crowded city. Kids can have a great time exploring the natural beauty of Marjan. There are many hiking trails and paths that lead through the forested areas, allowing them to discover local flora and fauna. There are also playgrounds and picnic spots along the way, so you can take a break and let the little ones have some fun. You can also rent bikes and explore Marjan’s trails on two wheels, which can be a thrilling adventure for kids. Some parts of Marjan offer access to the sea, where children can build sandcastles, swim, and enjoy beach activities. Bene Beach is one such popular spot for families.

5. Visit the Split Zoo

Located in the tranquil setting of Marjan Hill, the Split Zoo is home to various animal species native to the Mediterranean region. It’s a fantastic place for kids to learn about and observe animals in a natural environment.

In summer, kids can walk through the zoo’s greenery, enjoying the shade of trees and encountering animals like donkeys, peacocks, and many more. The zoo also offers educational programs and interactive experiences, making it an engaging and informative visit for children.

During the winter season, the zoo takes on a serene and peaceful ambiance. Although some animals may be less active in colder weather, it can still be a rewarding experience for kids to observe their behavior during winter.

6. Take a tour of Poljud Stadium & visit the Sports Museum

If your kids are sports enthusiasts, don’t miss the chance to visit Poljud Stadium, the home of the Hajduk Football Club. By visiting the stadium, you will also get to know the rich history of the club, from its founding in Prague to the grand celebration of its 100th anniversary.

You’ll hear about legendary players and coaches, see the trophies they’ve won, and hear stories about exciting matches and tours. You can also take pictures in the trophy room, the press room, the VIP box, and even on the field. It’s a visit your little football fans won’t forget!

On the other hand, regular ferry-boat lines allow visitors to explore some of the islands overlooking Split in just one day. Rides which take one or two hours will take you to the popular islands of Brač and Hvar.

Split is famous for more than just football. Explore the city’s sporting legacy and discover renowned athletes at the Sports Museum in Gripe. Popularly known as the Hall of Fame, it creatively showcases celebrated individuals from Split’s sports history, significant sporting events, and the grand receptions that Split has hosted for its sports champions.

7. Visit Froggyland museum

Step into the peculiar world of Froggyland, a unique museum showcasing a collection of over 500 stuffed frogs posed in human-like scenarios. These frogs were preserved meticulously, involving a complex and time-consuming technique that goes through their mouths. This process is so skillful that there are no visible cuts or marks on the frogs’ exteriors. Kids will be captivated by these unusual displays, and it’s a great opportunity for some original and fun family photos.

Winter Wonderland: Family Activities in Split for the (not so) chilly season

Split has plenty to offer during the winter months too. The city is quieter, and because the weather is still quite nice, you can do many of the same things you would in the summer. Each season has its own special charm, so we suggest visiting in both winter and summer to see how wonderful this city can be.

1. Visit Advent in Split

Visit Split’s charming Christmas market during the winter season. Kids can enjoy the festive atmosphere, meet Santa Claus, and savor delicious holiday treats like fritule (Croatian mini doughnuts). Advent in Split takes place at multiple locations, each attractively decorated and offering a variety of culinary delights to entice both locals and visitors. It usually involves several ice-skating rinks, numerous concerts, and a grand New Year’s Eve celebration. Advent in Split is a magical time. The city comes alive with Christmas lights, decorations, and entertainment. Enjoy carol singing, street performances, and the festive atmosphere with your little ones.

If you are staying at Marvie Hotel and want to enjoy a cozy evening within its premises, don’t worry – we will bring advent joy to you – at the terrace of Mareo Lobby Bar where you can taste all the traditional treats in a healthier version while cuddling in a soft blanket and listening to the Christmas popular music.

2. Visit Museums and Galleries

On those chilly or rainy winter days, explore indoor attractions like the City Museum of Split, the Ethnographic Museum, the Croatian Maritime Museum, or Mestrovic Gallery. These places offer educational exhibits and are perfect for a family outing.

The Natural History Museum in Split (Prirodoslovni muzej in Croatian) is a fantastic place for kids to explore and learn. With interactive exhibits on topics such as bugs, or marine life, this museum offers an engaging and educational experience for children. The hands-on activities and displays will ignite their curiosity and make learning fun.

The Museum of Illusions offers visitors a chance to explore the wonders of optical illusions and sensory tricks. This interactive museum provides a fun and educational experience for all ages, making it a perfect family outing. Inside, you’ll encounter mind-boggling exhibits, holograms, and installations that challenge your perception of reality.

For fans of the epic TV series “Game of Thrones,” the GoT Museum in Split is a must-visit destination. Located within the historic Diocletian’s Palace, which served as a filming location for the show, this museum allows you to step into the fantastical world shown in the series. You can explore authentic costumes, props, and interactive displays that bring the series to life.

3. Go Ice Skating

When the temperatures drop, head to the open-air ice-skating rink working at several locations in the city. Skating is a fun family activity that kids of all ages can enjoy. If parents are not as skilled at ice skating as they kids, they can enjoy mulled wine and watch their little ones’ acrobatics from a safe distance.

4. Relax at Marvie Hotel

During the winter months, Marvie Hotel offers various indoor activities where both parents and children can relax. The pool is suitable for both adults and children, while the relaxation area is reserved for those over 16 years old. Everyone can find something for themselves, unwind, and enjoy quality shared moments.

If sunbathing and swimming are high on your list of priorities, we suggest taking a day trip to the most popular beach in Croatia, on the island of Brač. Located on the southern shore, close to the village of Bol, Zlatni Rat, or Golden Horn beach is a unique pearl of nature, famous for its shape which changes direction due to sea currents. This stunning pebbled beach should find its place on your bucket list, whether you plan on sunbathing or surfing.

Make the most out of your holiday and stay at Marvie Hotel & Health. Feel free to contact us for any additional information on our day trips here and allow us to help you plan your 24 hours in Split.

5. Spend an afternoon shopping (with Kid’s Playrooms)

Split has many modern shopping malls that cater to every style and taste. Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast looking for the latest trends or an art lover in search of unique treasures, Split has something special in store for you. Visit popular destinations like Mall of Split, Joker mall, and City Center One, where you’ll find a wide range of international and local brands. These malls are not just shopping hubs but also vibrant entertainment centers with restaurants, cinemas, and family-friendly activities. So, while you indulge in retail therapy, your family can also enjoy a memorable day out. Most of these shopping malls also have a play zone where you can leave your kids for an hour or two, usually free of charge.

Mall of Split, located in the city’s suburbs, offers a spacious and well-equipped children’s play area where kids can enjoy activities like jumping on trampolines, playing in ball pits, or creating beautiful drawings.

Joker mall, situated near the city center, also has a dedicated playroom for children of all ages. The playroom has a special area for the youngest children up to 3 years old, where kids can have fun under the supervision of an adult. For children older than 3 years, various activities are offered under the care of caretakers, including mazes, climbing, board games, and many others, including themed playhouses where they can pretend to be chefs, police officers, doctors, shopkeepers, and more.

City Center One Split, located in the western part of the city, is another shopping center designed for families. It features a playroom where children can engage in fun activities, and they often organize various workshops as well.

6. Go to a Movie or theater

If the weather is not suitable for an outdoor activity, you can go to the cinema or the theater. When it comes to enjoying movies in Split, you have a variety of options to choose from. There are three modern multiplexes, Cinestar located in Joker Mall and Mall of Split, and Cineplexx in City Center One (CCO). These multiplexes offer comfortable theaters and screen all the latest blockbuster hits, making them ideal for catching up on the latest cinematic releases.

One notable aspect of the cinema experience in Croatia is that movies are typically screened with subtitles rather than being dubbed, allowing you to enjoy the original language of the film.

For those with younger children, don’t forget to check out the City Puppet Theatre, which provides engaging and family-friendly shows, making it a great option for a fun outing with the kids.
